Grease Trap Cleaning in Chicago

Grease trap cleaning is not a glamorous expense, but it is an important one. Opting for a low-cost company can be tempting, but you must remember the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” At Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning, we are here to ensure that you get the best service when it comes to grease interceptor and grease trap cleaning and maintenance.

If your grease traps aren’t correctly looked after, you run the risk of blockages, overflows, and other problems. It’s not worth taking that chance for just a few dollars of potential savings. Such a mishap could pose a health and safety violation, leaving you facing some potentially hefty fines. Indeed, if the problem is severe enough, then any mistakes caused by a bad contractor could result in severe consequences for your business such as being shut down for a while until the issue is fixed.

Choose Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning, and you can be confident that you will get top quality service from some of the best in the business. We are an eco-friendly company here to help you keep your grease interceptors clean, hygienic, and safe.

Chicago grease trap cleaning is a full-service grease trap maintenance service

We have a dedicated staff of highly qualified experts who take grease traps and interceptors seriously. We’re here to help you avoid stressing out over your grease trap or interceptor needs.

The health and safety codes in Chicago require you to keep detailed records of any service and maintenance work you have done on your grease management system. That’s something that we can help you with. We will take care of that record-keeping on your behalf, logging all the work that we perform. We hold on to those records so that all you have to do is give us a call if you are ever asked for them.

We will work closely with you and help you stay informed of the maintenance schedule required by your area’s health and safety codes. This means that you can be confident that you will always be working in compliance with Chicago’s code requirements. That way, you can focus on other, more pressing matters related to your business and leave any potential legal headaches to the experts.

What we promise

We are here to give you peace of mind and help you with all your grease trap cleaning needs. We pledge that we will:

– Always conduct our services in a way that aims to minimize disruption to your business activities.

– Recycle any waste products. For example, we can use them as soil edification, alternative biofuels, or a natural way of producing methane.

– Ensure that any wastes which cannot be recycled are handled using a licensed and environmentally friendly disposal site.

– We will always work to stay informed about any changes to the local laws and codes. We do this so you will not have to concern yourself with compliance issues. This allows you to focus on your usual business activities.

– We will keep detailed records of all grease trap or interceptor services performed on your property so that you can refer to those records should the need arise.

– We will regularly consult with you to ensure that you are up to date with your maintenance schedule, and it will always run smoothly.

Taking care of your grease trap

The grease trap on your premises is something that, while seemingly a small thing, is vital to the establishment’s ongoing success. The purpose of the grease trap and interceptor is to prevent grease from contaminating the sewer system. Having a properly maintained grease trap helps to avoid problems with the city officials, and it ensures that you are not polluting the environment. If you don’t maintain it properly, you could face warnings, fines, and nasty public health notices. Of course, this is never good PR for a food service business! That’s where we come in. We can maintain and service your grease trap and work in partnership with you so that your business is protected and is not harming the environment.

We specialize in restaurant grease traps

Home kitchens and restaurants are very, very different things. When you are serving food to the general public, you have safety and hygiene considerations that go far beyond what a standard kitchen would face. You need to keep track of the kitchen’s health and safety closely to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Overflow, excess waste, and sewage blockages can all lead to serious legal problems and code violations.

Grease trap installations are essential and beneficial to the establishment. Also, depending on the type of establishment you run, and where it is located, they may even be mandated by health and safety codes. When you choose to partner with Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning, we will maintain your grease trap, so you have peace of mind knowing that you’re operating within the law.

Do not try to operate without the help of professionals for grease trap cleaning and maintenance. Doing so runs the risk of accidentally violating the health codes in Chicago and could be a safety risk.

We have a team of highly trained technicians and a fleet of pump trucks that are on hand to service your grease trap and clean it too. Why not call us and get a free, no-obligation consultation and a quote for grease trap and interceptor cleaning, so you’ll know what you need to get started? Just call 312-626-4040 today, and we will be glad to help you.

Why partner with Chicago grease trap cleaning?

Our service offers the best value. We can help to save you money by providing you a price plan tailored to your needs. We work with a large variety of clients. We always do our best to offer tailored services that will work around the business’ day to day activities, fit within their budgets, and get the job done.

– We complete detailed paperwork for every job that we do so you don’t have to be worried about the mundane compliance issues. We keep the records so that if the Chicago health and safety regulators have any questions, you can show that you comply with all requirements for your type of business.

– We have many long-term clients that we value, and that trust us to get the job done. We offer discounts to long-term customers and hope that you will become one of the people who work with us on an ongoing basis.

– We offer discounts to business owners who have more than one location and work with us for grease trap cleaning.

– We offer expert service, delivered professionally, and have a good reputation that we always strive to uphold.

Don't let your grease trap overflow

You should never let your grease trap fill up to full capacity. There are several reasons for this:

– A full grease trap can reduce your air quality and increase the risk of fire in your property. It is a serious health and safety risk.

– Grease traps can smell, and when they fill up, the smell starts to spread. Your customers don’t want to eat in an environment that reeks of rancid oil, and your staff won’t enjoy working there either.

– If your customers complain about the smell, that will bring down local health and safety officers’ wrath. It will bring negative attention to the business. Also, since there is the risk of grease traps overflowing into the sewage system, you could face penalties for code violations on top of hygiene and foul odors. It is not worth the risk!

Grease trap pumping clears out your traps

Grease trap pumping is something that should be done by experts. It is not a good idea to have your employees try to do it because they probably don’t have the right equipment at their disposal. Even if they do, they probably don’t know how to use it effectively. Clearing out a grease trap requires some expertise. Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning has a team of highly trained experts. They can measure the grease level, pump out the trap, and then process the fat to be disposed of safely or used in an environmentally friendly process. We will also test the grease traps and interceptors to make sure that they are working correctly. Then we will fill out the required paperwork and store it so that if you ever need to show that your traps have been serviced, we will supply you with everything you need.

We offer free consultations and quotes so that you can get an idea of what grease trap cleaning will cost. There is no commitment or risk to calling us. We would be happy to discuss the process and help you understand if there are any other potential issues.

Assessing the issues: We will look at the trap to determine how much grease and waste will need to be removed. This is an essential first step because it helps us understand what equipment we need to do the job. It also gives us an idea of your maintenance schedule and whether you are cleaning the traps often enough (or even potentially too often).

Pumping: Pumping out the grease, fat, and oil is the next step. We use a suction hose to collect the oil, and then examine it to determine whether it is suitable for recycling or whether it will need careful disposal.

Cleaning: Once the trap has been emptied, we will clean it to remove any residue stuck to the sides and edges. Then, we test the sludge to check whether the trap is functioning as it should be.

If you would like to know more about our services, be sure to give us a call. We would be happy to address any concerns you have and come out to assess your property and provide a quote for the services you require. We are the leading grease trap and interceptor cleaning company in Chicago. Just call us or use our contact form to discuss your requirements. You’ll see why so many business owners in Chicago have made us their go-to company for their ongoing grease trap cleaning requirements.

Cleaning and pumping grease interceptors by Chicago grease trap cleaning

Grease Interceptor Cleaning and Pumping in Chicago, IL

Most people consider the industrial grease interceptor just another grease trap like those you find under your kitchen sink. A grease interceptor is actually an essential part of sewer systems and a crucial part of keeping sanitation levels high, especially in huge cities.

The grease interceptor is installed outside, out of sight, underground, and usually close to kitchen areas. As the wastewater flows through the interceptor, food particles, grease and oils will be trapped and contained in a large 750-gallon container, sometimes much larger. This vital component of the sewer system contains pollution, thus keeping these harmful pollutants, toxins, and contaminants from reaching the municipal sewer systems.

These grease interceptors can come in a wide variety of designs with varying levels of efficiency. It will be necessary to evaluate certain conditions and variables at your establishment to ensure the grease interceptor will work effectively. When the system is not installed correctly, the efficiency can be knocked down to a mere 30% interception capacity. But, when properly installed, and all considerations are adequately evaluated, the ability to remove grease, oils, and pollutants is increased to 85% efficiency. This is the highest achievable rating for grease interceptors. Without servicing, the efficiency will quickly drop below this level risking clogs, costlier servicing, or worse, fines. Pumping is vital to keeping interceptors in good condition.

How does the pumping and cleaning process work?

The menial grease trap is like a hole in the ground that traps grease to the uninformed mind. But the intellect and design that makes these vital sewer components function are much greater than that. Many components of a grease interceptor system function on principals that great minds like Archimedes and Bernoulli themselves weighed in on.

The intricate design of grease interceptors ensures greases are collected efficiently, and no overflow problems are experienced. Nevertheless, due to the variety of components and the many small nooks and crannies where irregular build-up can occur, these trap systems must be regularly cleaned. Because of the nature of grease traps, it is essential to apply professional treatment to ensure the longevity and preserve the usefulness of your Chicago Grease Interceptors.

Only a professional and highly experienced team like Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning will understand how to perform this cleaning effectively. First, all the contents and trapped contaminants of the grease trap will have to be removed and eliminated. As you may imagine, the thickest sludge will collect at the bottom. Your grease trap cleaners will pump the traps’ refuse before using a high-powered hydro jet to purify and sanitize the rest of the contraption. A steady stream of water under 3000 PSI is more than suitable to release large deposits of greasy, sticky waste.

Call Chicago Grease Trap Cleaning Company to provide your grease interceptor with superior cleaning and pumping services. Our experienced grease trap professionals have worked on interceptors of all sizes, designs, and purposes, even large industrial locations. Call us today for an estimate on your project.

FAQ: Chicago grease trap cleaning service

Are you considering a grease trap or grease interceptor cleaning service? You might have some questions in mind regarding the use. Here’s a list of some of the frequently asked questions and important things you should know about our service.

Define a grease trap?

A grease trap may be defined as a tank used for collecting grease, oil, and fat (commonly called FOG) that goes into the sink in a typical kitchen operation. Grease traps are often placed outdoors and, in many cases, underground. Commercial kitchens in Chicago are legally required to have grease traps to prevent FOG flow into the city water system. These tanks collect FOG to prevent it from reaching the water system. This is the reason grease traps are regulated, and closely monitored by local enforcement agencies.

Am I allowed to dispose of grease directly in the grease trap?

You can’t do that. Grease traps are not meant for the disposal of grease. You should never put additional oil into a grease trap as these are designed to collect the FOG that enters them. These are not intended to be a grease disposal system, and you should never overload them.

What is the need for a grease trap?

The authorities, including the city of Chicago, do not want any pollutants entering the water system. This is the reason commercial kitchens are required to install grease traps. If your kitchen produces FOG, you need to have a grease trap installed at your location. Chicago Grease Trap Pumping follows the regulations in the City of Chicago to ensure that our customers have it installed correctly, and it is maintained as per the legal requirements.

How does a grease trap work?

The typical operations in your kitchen generate a lot of greases which go down the drain. This grease collects in the grease trap, and the remaining water flows down. In this holding container, the grease stays afloat. The remaining wastewater moves through a sewer pipeline into the city sewer system. This holding container eventually fills up with grease and needs to be cleaned regularly. Several methods are employed to clean the grease trap, and different municipalities have different legal requirements. Give us a call for grease trap cleaning services, and we will make sure that your grease trap is cleaned as per the standards defined by the city of Chicago.

What are the maintenance requirements for my grease trap?

You should never try to do it on your own. It’s a job for the professionals, and you should call Chicago Grease Trap Pumping to do the cleaning. We have helped many clients who have gone the DIY route, which has always led to damages. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will save money by doing it on your own. You will eventually end up losing money instead of saving some.

In addition to hiring professional grease trap cleaning services, here are some tips for proper maintenance:

  • Properly train the staff members in your team on how to handle food waste and grease.
  • Before cleaning the plates, staff members need to scrape the remaining food waste from the plates.
  • Use sink covers to prevent debris from getting into the drain.
  • Keep checking the grease trap for any signs of wear and tear regularly. If the grease trap gives some kind of odor, you need to check whether it’s time to replace the gasket sealing the lid.

Is it possible to recycle trapped grease and how to use it?

It’s possible to recycle and reuse the trapped grease. Grease removed from the trap is typically known as brown grease. If the regulations allow, it can be used as boiler fuel or for other purposes. You can’t use it as food for animals. Also, regulations do not let brown grease processing at a place where food ingredients are produced, or animals are fed.

Professional services that also collect cooking oil and bone scraps used for producing animal food might also offer grease trap servicing. However, they need to use different vehicles. Also, grease recovered from the trap shouldn’t be taken to the same place used for producing animal food.

Having said that, it is not common to recycle and reuse trapped grease. Usually, it is taken to facilities designed to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner.

How do I choose the size of the grease trap?

You need to choose the right size grease trap for your kitchen to ensure optimal functioning. Ideally, you should consult a professional service such as the Chicago Grease Trap Pumping to help you choose the right one.

There are 2 essential criteria you need to consider before choosing a grease trap: your business needs and the city of Chicago regulations.

In some cases, municipalities require businesses to have a minimum grease trap size, which is typically dependent on the size and type of business. In such cases, it’s easy for you to make a choice. If the regulations don’t call for a minimum size, you need only consider your establishment’s needs. Typically, exterior grease traps have a size of more than 1000 gallons. It’s a considerable investment, and you need to think carefully before choosing one. Give us a call now to get expert advice on choosing the right size grease trap.

Where do I buy a grease trap?

We offer restaurant grease trap cleaning services, but we don’t offer grease trap installation service. We also do not have grease traps available for sale. You will need to contact a plumber to buy and install the right grease trap as per your business needs. As mentioned above, you need to consider the local regulations and your business size to make the right choice.

After installing the grease trap, the professionals at Chicago Grease Trap Pumping are available to maintain the grease trap. We will ensure that it keeps running properly and doesn’t get you into any legal trouble.

How frequently do I need grease trap cleaning services?

It depends on the size of your business. Needless to say, cleaning and servicing will be needed more frequently for a kitchen that produces a lot of greases. This is the reason we design a customized maintenance schedule for every single client of ours.

How is a grease trap cleaned?

Several methods are used for cleaning a grease trap. The city of Chicago regulations requires a specific method for particular businesses. We recommend using a reliable, properly licensed, and reputable grease trap cleaning service to ensure it is cleaned as per the local regulations.

Again, we would like to stress the importance of hiring a professional provider who is up to date with the local regulations to make sure you are always in compliance. We have helped several clients who came running to us after attempting the DIY approach. Usually, it takes only one attempt for clients, and they never try cleaning the grease trap again on their own. It’s a professional task that’s unpleasant and labor-intensive and should never be done by untrained individuals. If unqualified people end up doing it, it usually leads to disasters.

If you want to attempt the DIY approach, you need to first learn about the city’s methods for your particular business. Usually, it’s one of these 2 methods:

  • Pump and Return: In this method, the grease trap is pumped to remove the fat, oil, and grease, and water is separated from this mixture. FOG is then separated, and wastewater is released back into the trap. This method requires a particular vehicle. This is why not all providers offering grease trap cleaning services use this method. Keep in mind that it’s the preferred method due to certain inherent advantages.
  • Dry Pumping: In this method, the grease trap is completely emptied and is left to dry. However, it leads to a strong unpleasant odor until there is water again in the container.

Keep in mind that the removal of FOG is only the first step in the cleaning process. You also need to dispose of it as per the local regulations. If you do not want to get fined, you need to make sure it is disposed of only at an authorized location. This is true whether you’re doing it on your own or using a service provider. Technical assistance is often provided by city staff to help restaurants save money on cleaning costs by using FOG reduction technology and some of the best management practices.

How am I responsible for the material removed from a grease trap?

As a business owner in Chicago, you need to make sure that anything removed from the grease trap is disposed of as per the local regulations. If you use a non-reputable service provider who inappropriately disposes of the waste, it is you who will be fined. Simply put, you need to take due care when it comes to choosing the right grease trap cleaning provider. Choose a reputable company such as Chicago Grease Trap Pumping to ensure proper compliance with the local regulations.

Do I need to pay a fine for grease trap overflows?

Yes, you will be fined, but the amount of the fine depends on a variety of factors. Your local authority will consider several factors to determine the fine in case of a grease trap overflow. Some of these factors might include:

  • Maintenance frequency of the grease trap
  • Presence of fat content in the grease samples collected from the trap
  • Whether it’s your first overflow, or you are a repeat offender

The type and size of your business will also affect the amount of the fines. Get in touch with a reputed grease trap cleaning service to know more about the regulations and fines that might apply to your business.

How can you help with my grease trap overflow?

Call us now to get help with an overflowing grease trap. Give us a call at 312-626-4040 for professional and expert advice. Our team of professionals will happily clean and service the grease trap. However, we will need to engage a plumber if the overflow has been caused by a clog. Don’t forget that you can prevent an overflow situation by scheduling regular service for the grease trap.

What's that smell in my restaurant after grease trap cleaning?

If your restaurant has a smell right after your grease trap has been cleaned, it might be due to several reasons:

  • A corroded or worn out gasket covering the manhole cover that allows the gases inside to leave the grease trap. These gases then spread in your restaurant. If that’s the cause, you need to get the gasket changed immediately.
  • If there is a blockage in the drain, it might cause a backup in the trap line. You need to call in a plumber to get rid of the blockage.
  • If the dry pumping method of cleaning has been used by your service provider, it will lead to odor, but it should disappear very soon. To prevent your restaurant smelling like that again, you need to employ a service provider that uses the pump and return cleaning method.

Can I call you for repairing of grease traps?

Currently, our team does not provide repair services for grease traps. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Our team of professionals will keep a check on the grease trap during regular service visits.
  • Our team will take a close look at the grease trap and, if needed, recommend better models and maintenance requirements to prevent any avoidable issues/problems.

We check grease traps regularly to make sure a plumber intervention isn’t required.

Define a grease interceptor?

Washing dishes, general cleaning, and cooking in a kitchen produce grease that flows into the sink drain. This waste grease is required to be intercepted or captured before it flows into the septic system line. A grease interceptor is a device that is installed before or after the line that leads into the septic system.

Define a HGI?

It stands for a hydro mechanical grease interceptor. It is the technical term for the grease trap. These traps are usually installed immediately after the sink drain and FOG conveyance units. The capacity of a grease trap is determined by the amount of water flowing through it. It usually ranges from 20 to 50 GPM.

Define a GGI?

It stands for gravity grease interceptor. Usually, a gravity grease interceptor is installed outside the kitchen. It can be above or below the ground. The capacity of a gravity grease interceptor ranges from 1000 to 4000 gallons. The primary goal of an interceptor is to separate the particulates and grease waste from wastewater.

What type of maintenance is needed for my grease interceptor?

Regular servicing and maintenance of the grease interceptor are needed to keep the waste grease from flowing into the sewer system. If the grease interceptor isn’t maintained correctly, it might cause clogs in the drains flowing to the sewer line. This is due to the waste grease and food solids remaining in the drain that will harden over time.

The hardened grease and food solids will cause a blockage leading to a backup of wastewater into your premises. This backup will cause foul odors and also harmful contamination. If there is a blockage in the sewer line, it might cause a backup leading to an overflow.  This will hurt the environment and, in some cases, might also damage neighboring establishments.

In such cases, you will have to pay a steep fine issued by the local authorities. You might also be held responsible for any property damages due to the blockage.

How frequently does a grease interceptor needs to be cleaned?

Monthly pumping is recommended for hydro mechanical grease interceptors. Cleaning at least once every 3 months is recommended for gravity grease interceptors. These are bigger in size and located outdoors.

Most local authorities now have regulations requiring regular cleaning of grease interceptors for Food Service Establishments. Merely cleaning the interceptors as needed is unacceptable, and these need to be cleaned within precise intervals. Get in touch with your local authorities to know more about regulations concerning the schedule for cleaning a grease interceptor.

Is it okay to ask my own employees to clean the grease interceptor?

It is not advised to use your own employees. They do not have the necessary training and experience for cleaning the grease interceptor. Cleaning needs to be done as per the set standards. Also, the city staff requires cleaning/service reports.

Chicago Grease Trap Services is proud to be a member of the Preferred Pumper Program. It means we are recognized as a competent authority as per the standards devised by the local authorities. You can rest assured that we will do the cleaning job as per the regulations, and you won’t have any compliance issues as per the local codes.

Additionally, the Preferred Pumper Program members are properly certified, which means they have the necessary training and knowledge to follow the local authorities’ guidelines. The use of PPP registered service companies isn’t a legal requirement, but it is encouraged to use such services.
